VENETIAN MIRROR
carved and gilded wood
A large Venetian mirror, crafted from finely carved and gilded wood. The frame, of generous proportions, is adorned along its band with raised double-scroll motifs and a dense vegetal decoration, featuring vines, leaves, and flowers that break up the linear flow.
The elaborate pierced crest, striking in its dramatic effect, extends across a double-scroll structure and features a small secondary mirror at its centre, topped by an anthropomorphic mask with stylised features. From this mask, intricate foliage scrolls extend, culminating in a floral pinnacle.
The upper corners of the frame are embellished with vigorous scrolls that extend laterally, while the vegetal decorations cascade down the sides, contributing to a sense of dynamic continuity. The meticulous craftsmanship and attention to ornamental detail are unmistakably in the style of 18th-century Venetian production, in keeping with the Louis XV style, characterized by its lightness, movement, and opulent decoration.
