SPOOL TABLE
walnut and chestnut wood.
This solid walnut and chestnut wood table, whose Renaissance-esque style betrays a possible Tuscan manufacture origin, can be dates to around the beginning of the 17th century.
The rectangular tabletop is decorated with notching, and the underlying band is punctuated by three aligned drawers, each showing a simple, turned wooden knob pull. These drawers are framed by simple mouldings that emphasize their structure.
The structure rests on four spool-turned legs, ending in onion or bun-shaped feet, which are typical of the period. The legs are joined by crosspieces at the bottom, forming a robust H-shaped base that provides stability and solidity to the table. The wood finish is dark toned and patinated, highlighting the depth of the walnut’s colour and its natural grain. Overall, the piece shows a robust, functional appearance with great character, and its aesthetic fits well into rustic or traditional settings, such as a refectory.
