VITTORIO AMEDEO CIGNAROLI, circle of

Landscape with fortress and shepherds
oil on canvas, cm. 90×93
In a river landscape bathed in the warm, golden light typical of sunset hours, a large, arched tree with dense foliage dominates the foreground on the right, elegantly framing the scene. Beneath it, some shepherds are depicted in their daily routine alongside a flock of grazing animals. In the background, the idealized ruins of a castle rise over a wooded hill, while the sky is painted with delicate and vaporous shades of pink.
The composition, structured with a masterful diagonal perspective, reflects the tradition of classical Roman “imaginary landscape” inspired by the French artist Gaspard Dughet (1615-1675), here reinterpreted with a more sentimental and late-Baroque sensibility. The suspended atmosphere, the softness of tonal transitions, and the harmony between figures and nature recall the style of the artist from Piedmont, Vittorio Amedeo Cignaroli, namely the leading figure of idealized landscape painting at the Savoy court in the late 18th century.
Primarily active in Turin, Cignaroli headed a large workshop renowned for its diverse production, which ranged from idealized views to landscapes populated by animals and shepherds, and masterfully combined Roman models with refined Arcadian taste conceiving lyrical and delicate compositions.
