FRANCO-FLEMISH MAESTRO FROM THE 16TH CENTURY
Madonna with the Child
sculpted, painted and partially gilded wood, cm 46 height
The elegant pose of this Madonna with Child, the style of the dress, draped with large brims, still seem to convey Gothic undertones. However, these elements are contradicted by the robust corporeity and by a certain realism, both indications of a later execution, during the sixteenth century, most likely within the Flemish region or with French influences.
The Renaissance aspect is also confirmed by the classically shaped plinth on which the sculpture stands, centered by a shaped shield containing a noble coat of arms.
