MONUMENTAL ANDIRONS
cast bronze
These two andirons, which it would be more appropriate to define fireplace sculptures, as they are made without the iron supports on their rear necessary to serve their purpose, are a typical example of the eclectic and citationist style of the Nineteenth century. In fact, they clearly echo the art of late Mannerism, with figures of satyrs and monsters in the style of, or directly copied from works from, this period, as in the case of the Satyr by Giambologna which appears on top of the work, made by the Flemish artist as decoration of Palazzo Vecchietti in Canto dei Diavoli, in the Old Market Square of Florence.
