ANDREA DELLA ROBBIA AND WORKSHOP
Tuscany, 16th century
Madonna with the Child
modelled and painted stucco, cm 114×80
This beautiful Madonna and Child is a rare stucco piece after a model by Andrea della Robbia, to be precise the Madonna and Child tondo created in around 1502 for Borgo San Sepolcro and now in the city’s Museo Civico.
Unlike the latter, characterised by a series of veils covering the head, our Madonna has flowing brown hair.
The quality of this stucco piece and the excellent state of preservation of the original polychrome suggest it was produced in Andrea’s workshop, not too long after the start of the century, when he was working on the San Sepolcro template.
In this case, the presence of the ancient tabernacle frame testifies to the persistence of the domestic worship of this object.
