GROUP OF FOUR CHAIRS IN NAPOLEON III STYLE
lacquered, gilded wood and fabric
The particular shape of the chairs, with a curved back, recalls the “klismos”, a type of chair used in ancient Greece and recurring in depictions of antique furniture. This style was widespread during the late 18th century and is one of the first forms of an ergonomic piece of furniture. The curved, openwork back is carved with a motif of swans forming a lyre, while the top bar is decorated with a classical festoon. The front legs are grooved, tapered and turned, while the curved back legs are more understated. The seats are upholstered in 19th-century damask fabric.
