‘BORGHESE’ VASE

Marble.

The figurative frieze on this marble vase depicts a Dionysian procession with the Dionysius accompanied by Arianna, satyrs and Maenads dancing and playing music, above which a grape vine has been sculpted.

The vase is a rather loose reproduction, schematically updating the original elaborate classicism, of one of the most famous works of its kind, the large krater from the collection of the Borghese family now in the Louvre. Requisitioned by Napoleon in 1807, the original is a supreme example of neo-Attic sculpture from the 1st century BC and has been copied many times since its discovery in 1569.
