TORCH HOLDER

gilt wood with parts decorated with estofado technique

Characterized by the elegant gilding, this torch holder is the product of a union between a later pyramid-shaped base with triangular plan, which supports the tall turned baluster-shaped trunk characterized by a long segment with a leaf motif, which ends in a garland of fruits and flowers. The use of the so-called “estofado de oro” scratching technique, of Spanish origin, which may for instance be observed in the leaves animating the trunk, reveals the southern Italian origin of the item.

Southern Italy, 16th century; base from 19th century
