Scultore attivo nella prima metà del XVIII secolo

VENETIAN SCULPTOR ACTIVE IN THE EARLY 17TH CENTURY

Saint (Lucy?)

fruit wood with polychrome traces, cm 148 height

Statue of a standing saint, perhaps Saint Lucia; her face with gentle features is turned slightly towards the right. Her left hand holds a flap of the draped dress, to form a small depression that perhaps once contained an attribute. Also the right hand may have held an object, for instance a palm of martyrdom.

Echoes of the mature work of Antonio Trilli, sculptor from Feltre (1522-?) may be observed in the stylistic accomplishment and formal complexity. Even if the Venetian late-mannerist style inspired by the works of Sansovino and Alessandro Vittoria is perceptible, it is nevertheless clear that this sculptor was familiar with the stylistic innovations of the 17th century, as witnessed by the base formed of stylized clouds, the drapery that is classical but at the same time more voluminous and wide, with ample smooth surfaces interrupted by deep transversal folds.
