MAESTRO FROM VENETO OF THE SIXTEENTH CENTURY
Relief with Madonna with the Child
bronze, cm 14,5×11
The Madonna sits with a book in her hand, surrounded by a classical architecture. Her Son, depicted in a plastic pose, rises from her womb, while Saint Giovannino arrives from the side offering them a fruit.
This courtly and airy composition of venetian taste mixed with elements from central Italy, such as the Christ’s twisted athletic body, is reminiscent of the work of Jacopo Sansovino, a Florentine sculptor active in Venice from 1527 until his death in 1570. Notably, similar ingredients are found in a sculpture often referred to Sansovino, which is preserved in the Museum of Fine Arts, in Budapest (inv. n. 54.335).
