MARRIAGE CHEST

 polychrome wood

The slightly rounded front of this chest is decorated with grotesque motifs inside polylobed panels, flanked by other rectilinear ones. In the centre there is an allegorical female figure which supports a torch; a lion is lying down next to her. Painted in shades of red and ochre, the chest almost seems to evoke the colours of the frescoes of classical antiquity, with an orderly division of the figurative space that reminds of finely sculpted bas-reliefs.
