Roman painter from the 17th century
Still life with parrot
oil on canvas, cm 99×73,5
A charming parrot appears in the centre of this still life, surrounded by fruits and a colourful bouquet arranged in an elegant vase. The picturesque exploded watermelon in the foreground and the flowers which are overflowing from the container invade the space like fireworks, giving the painting a clearly Baroque atmosphere.
The decorative exuberance of the painting is most likely retraceable to a Roman area, in the wake of the success of the Eternal City’s greatest flower painter, Mario dei Fiori (1603-1673). The painting may be dated to around the second half of the century.
