PAIR OF PUTTI WITH CROWN
carved and gilded wood
This small pair of flying putti holding a crown has been carved and gilded with particular care. The base metal can be glimpsed beneath the beautiful gilding. It was probably part of a larger composition where the two angels were tasked with crowning a Virgin in Glory who has since been lost.
The carving style, particularly the elegant forms and the lightness of the putti’s flight, recalls 17th-century Venetian sculpture.
