PAIR OF ANGELS
carved walnut wood
The two putti protrude forward in a relief that verges on the round, framed by Baroque volutes moving across the background, both standing above a bird, perhaps a phoenix, perched on the plinth.
This is undoubtedly a late Baroque composition verging on Rococo exuberance, whose graceful figures recall the highest tradition of the Veneto mainland, in particular the workshop of the Brustolon family of Belluno.
Like other pieces from this workshop, generally in walnut, without polychromy or gilding, ours too seem to fluctuate between verisimilitude and baroque fantasy. The quality of the carving is high, with a number of subtly worked sections, suggesting that these two sculptures were part of a larger composition.
