PAIR OF ANGEL CANDLE HOLDERS

sculpted, gilt and polychrome wood

This pair of candle-bearing angels, carved in gilded and polychrome wood, are characterized by their meticulous anatomical detail, evident in their refined contraposto and the distinctively muscular legs. These sculptures date to around the 16th century, possibly from Central Italy. The rich gilding and rendering of the features of the two figures enhance their beauty and sacred character. Each angel is portrayed standing on a base that reminds of stylized rocks or clouds, which feature faces of cherubs. The two figures are enriched by wide, spread golden wings, and long finely carved robes.

Furthermore, both angels hold a decorated and gilded vertical object that serves as a candle holder. Their smiling faces show delicate features and are framed by thick hair – recurring elements in the iconography of angels of the period.
