PAIR OF AEDICULES
carved, polychrome and gilded wood
This beautiful pair of bookcases was made by adapting two large Sienese tabernacle frames. Dating to the Renaissance, the pair recalls rigorous classical designs softened by gilding and the use of polychrome. The trabeation stands out for the significantly protruding shelf cornice, while the frieze is enhanced by a high-relief cherub’s head in the centre of a festoon.
Two polychrome, tapering columns, carved as pilasters, support the architrave and culminate in composite capitals, above which protrude two cherub heads, also present in the side panels. The shaped base projects at the sides and front to form the plinths of the pilasters, decorated with floral elements. The central portion features some visible Roman numerals (AD MCCCCDX and MDCXXXVIII).
The central frame is finely worked with a smooth rebate on a beaded band followed by a carved edge with grooves that culminate in leaves at the corners.
