NAPOLEON APPOINTS JOACHIM MURAT AS KING OF NAPLES
sculpted alabaster
Two personalities are represented, wearing the costumes of antique Roman leaders. The seated one, shown as he is about to receive a helmet from the other, is recognizable as Joachim Murat (1767-1815), crowned as King of Naples in 1808 by his brother-in-law Napoleon Bonaparte. The emperor, whose face has been idealized, stands next to Murat, his hand making his customary gesture.
