VESTRY SIDEBOARD
walnut wood and briar
This imposing double-sided sacristy cabinet is an excellent example of Venetian Baroque furniture, masterfully crafted from walnut wood and burl. The harmonious interplay of cornices, mouldings, and pilasters creates a perfect architectural balance, a distinctive feature of ecclesiastical furnishings of the period.
The slightly narrower upper body is elegantly decorated with four panels, similar to those on the lower body, which conceal two practical drop-front doors. These are punctuated by tapering pilasters, enriched in the centre by refined root inlays that embellish their surface. The top of the cabinet is crowned by a projecting cornice, beneath which six drawers, almost invisible, likely intended for candelabras or other sources of illumination, typical of sacred furnishings.
The wider and more imposing lower body features four doors surmounted by two large drawers with knob handles. These doors are decorated with recessed rectangular panels, framed by deep mouldings that accentuate their three-dimensionality. Between the central doors and on the outer sides, stand three robust pilasters, which not only lend verticality and structure to the cabinet but also emphasize its solid and well-proportioned architecture.
