CRUCIFIX
Carved wood
This sculpture represents a beautiful carved wooden crucifix. The very detailed workmanship of the material produces an extraordinary anatomical structure that indicates a certain degree of naturalism. The torso features an impressive musculature that is certainly reminiscent of Michelangelo’s great models in Rome. The head is tilted downwards to indicate Christ’s death, while the tragic vision of the crown of thorns, still worn on the forehead, increases the emotional grip on the viewer.
The curly hair and beard, as well as the animated drapery of the loincloth, are reminiscent of many late 16th-century sculptures to be found in the Apennine area between Tuscany, Umbria, Marche and Lazio, within the sphere of influence of late 16th-century Roman Mannerist sculpture.
