CHARITY
sculpted marble
A semi-clad young woman carries a child at her breast, while holding the hand of a second child who appears to be playing as it looks out of the composition. This is undoubtedly a sculpture of the allegory of Charity, one of the theological virtues that recalls the antique model.
It seems likely that this sculpture was part of a series of at least three, including Faith and Hope.
The clearly Baroque style of the carving recalls the work of the Bolognese PioÌ family of stuccoworkers and sculptors who were active from the second half of the 17th century well into the next century. The author of our sculpture seems to descend from that particular cultural environment.
