BUST OF SAINT PETER
carved wood painted in imitation bronze, gilded and carved wooden capitals
These highly scenic sculptures depict the two apostles founders of the Church, with ancient-style faces and voluminous draperies. The monumental busts are supported by overturned Corinthian capitals, entirely gilded.
The workshop behind these two works, probably active in Northern Italy, also made two other busts in imitation bronze portraying the same saints on a slightly smaller scale (80 centimeters without the base, 100 centimeters with the base), which we have already introduced in a previous catalogue.
