Scultore toscano del XVI secolo

BACCHUS

sculpted marble

This sculpture features the typical iconography of the god Bacchus, shown standing and naked, holding a cup of wine and with a garland of vine leaves in his hair. The position and style of the sculpture fit perfectly into the cultural climate in Florence and more generally in Tuscany in the second half of the 16th century. The rediscovery of antiquity, boosted by Medici patronage, led to an explosion in the demand for marble sculpture that recalled Roman and Greek models.

Although the sculpture cannot be attributed to a specific sculptor, it shows a good quality of carving, reminiscent of the style of Bartolomeo Ammannati.
