EARLY 18TH-CENTURY CENTRAL ITALIAN SCULPTOR

Pair of caryatids

Carved and gilded wood, cm 145 height

The gilded wood sculptures presented here belong to the late Baroque production of refined and sumptuous objects made to enrich furnishings and homes. The two figures, male and female, represent a pair of caryatids probably forming part of a sumptuous architectural piece of furniture, recalling the front of a “stipo monetiere” cabinet. The corbels supported by the two figures are adorned with a garland of fruit and foliage, while the circular plinth bases are embellished with plant festoons and terminate in feet decorated with curled volutes.
