DANCING FAUN

Patinated bronze

This bronze faithfully replicates one of the most famous sculptures found during the archaeological excavations of Pompeii. It mirrors the pose of the dancing faun in bronze that adorned the center of the impluvium in the courtyard of a noble house in the Campanian city. This sculpture is now housed in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples.

It can be assumed, therefore, that the fame of the sculpture, celebrated in engravings and prints already in the 19th century, prompted the production of more or less faithful copies for a presumably flourishing market. Our version is slightly smaller than the one in Naples (standing at about 85 cm tall), suggesting it may be an academic composition rather than a direct cast.
