CONCERT HARP
column in sculpted and gilt maple wood and parts in brass
The concert harp with double-movement pedals was patented in 1811 by a Frenchman who worked in London, Sébastien Erard (1752-1831). From that year until 1920 Erard produced 3500 of the so-called “Grecian” concert harps, characterized by the classical motif on top of the column and the 43 chords. The harp we are presenting was realized, on the basis of the model of the Erard company, by the prestigious Erat works in London. John Erat, a harp builder who had received his training under Erard in London, and who left his activity to his sons Jacob Erat and James Erat on his death, in 1821.
