1596<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><em>The finding of Moses<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">oil on canvas, cm. 100&#215;150<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Dated: 1590 ca. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The biblical episode of the Finding of the Infant Moses emerged as a distinct subject in the Venetian region as early as the 1540s. Until then, he patriarch&#8217;s life was usually depicted in extensive narrative cycles that focused more on his adult life than his childhood. However, it should be noted that this scene was part of the 15th-century fresco cycle in the Sistine Chapel, before the destruction of the back wall by Michelangelo for the painting of his Last Judgement. During the 16th century, this episode was probably depicted on numerous occasions in paintings commissioned by affluent Venetian families, due to the protective function attributed to the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Being the subject an exploration of motherhood, of an escaped infanticide, and of a peaceful and constructive female response to the trauma of denied or endangered maternity, such depictions were intended for private rooms rather than as part of narrative cycles in sacred spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The narrative focusses on the industriousness of the women involved, both Hebrew and Egyptian, and their collaborative efforts to save the infant Moses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paolo Veronese, in collaboration with his brother Benedetto and his sons Gabriele and Carletto Caliari, depicted the subject of The Finding of Moses on no fewer than ten occasions, varying its composition in terms of format and size. All surviving versions, regardless of size, are dated to around the 1580s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our painting is reminiscent of the telero currently housed at the Mus\u00e9e des Beaux-Arts in Dijon, and can be attributed to Veronese\u2019s workshop; more precisely, the hand of Carletto Caliari can be discerned. The figures, arranged in a fan-like composition and dressed in 16th-century clothing to facilitate the patrons\u2019 identification with the scene, are set against an expansive landscape.
