S068
SOUTHERN ITALIAN SCULPTOR FROM THE 16TH CENTURY
Madonna with Child

Sculpted wood with polychrome finish
altezza cm. 104

This graceful sculpture represents the Virgin standing, as she holds Jesus. The pose of the latter, who is reaching outwards, away from his mother, accentuates the dynamism of the composition. The polychrome surfaces, which originally also featured gilt parts but which have arrived to our days in a fragmented condition as a result of superimpositions, gave the work a certain realism which increased the impact of devotional fervour. The sculpture was most probably realized towards the end of the Sixteenth century by a Southern Italian, perhaps Neapolitan, artist who has received new impulses thanks to the presence in the city of Tuscan artists as Michelangelo Naccherino.
